Large ceiling fans have become extremely popular in recent years. It is essential to understand how a fan’s size and its distance from ceiling and floor affect the air circulation in the room.

Select a ceiling fan with proper diameter. If a ceiling fan is too large, it disturbs the design of the room. You need to select a fan of proper size depending on the size of the room. If you have a rectangular room, then probably installing two small fans would be a better option. If a large fan is installed in the center, most parts of the room will not get proper air circulation.

Choosing the right size fan

Nowadays ceiling fans are available in many different sizes to suit most of the big floor plans. You can buy large ceiling fans with different blade spans such as 62, 72, 80, and 84 inches. Larger ceiling fans are better for large rooms and areas. They make you feel comfortable.

A general guideline is that for a room of 8×8 feet, a 30 inch-diameter ceiling fan would be good. For a room of 9×9 to 12×12 feet, it would be better to install a fan of 41 to 50-inch diameter. Likewise, for a 12×12 and 16×16 feet room, a 51 to 60-inch diameter fan is recommended. For areas of more than 16×16 feet, you will need fans of 61 to 70 inch diameter.

Height of the ceiling

Height of the ceiling also plays an important role. The fan should not hang too low over the head. The optimal distance of a ceiling fan is about 8 to 9 feet from the floor.

You need to be careful while installing a big fan if you have a room that is not big enough. Allow a space of 2 to 3 feet from the walls or any other obstruction. There must be at least a distance of 2 feet from the walls to the tip of the blades so that the fans work in an efficient manner.

A ceiling fan works by pushing the air above the blades to the living level. The air is moved to the floor and then this air is circulated back to the top of the blades. This air moves across the walls before reaching the top. This process is repeated. For the fans to work efficiently, the area above the blades and the space from the tip of the blades to the wall should be optimum.

The ceiling height is the main factor that decides the kind of fan you should install. A typical standard mount of 3 to 5 inches rod is ideal to fix the ceiling fan. Ceilings that are higher than 8 feet require an additional rod length to get the fan to an ideal height. Make sure you have a7 feet clearance from the blades of the fan to the floor. With this downrod arrangement for ceiling fans, the blades of the fan will have a nice space from the ceiling, and there would be enough supply of air above the blades to have a good air circulation throughout the room.

For some rooms with low ceilings, you may require a low ceiling adapter. They don’t use a downrod. In such cases air circulation is reduced.

Other factors to consider

Finally, you can check for some great designs in ceiling fans. If you have a standard 8 feet ceiling in your room, you can choose the color of your fan depending on the walls. A nice bronze colored fan would be ideal for big rooms. You can also complement your room with a good classic style white fan.

Blade material is one factor you should consider while buying a big fan. Normally these blades are made of wood, aluminum, and plastic. Wooden blades are not very popular in large ceiling fans, but if you intend to give that traditional touch to your rooms, you can select some of the wooden-blade fans. Aluminum blades are very light and used in most of the large fans.

Large ceiling fans have very robust motors. They use DC motors which spin faster than AC motors and their blades provide good air circulation. One of the advantages of such motor is the speed settings. You can control the speed remotely and select from low to high speeds. These fans are quieter and offer better comfort. To get more air circulation, you can increase the blade size. This would be efficient in terms of energy consumption as well.
